Design Sprint
THE ISSUE
As out of office work becomes more common place following the Coronavirus pandemic, employees often out seek spaces outside the office to get work done efficiently and without disruption.
While indoor space is commonplace, finding a space that is quiet, allows for phone calls and meetings, all while having an inviting atmosphere can be quite difficult to find in short notice.
THE SOLUTION
Through a 4-day long design sprint, developing a useable function within an app that allows users to quickly identify and reserve space that suits their work needs.
DESIGNER ROLE
Designer role included coordinating a 7-day design sprint with a team to build a functional MVP that allows for identifying work space in an efficient manner.
Day 1 - Research and Mapping
User Interviews
Because of time constraints for the project, research consisted of user interviews and competitive analysis, wherein painpoints and user needs for a potential space locating function were identified.
Findings from user interviews identified several clear needs and concerns:
Main Painpoint:
1) At present, identifying a space takes too long and is too cumbersome and too much time is spent digging through information.
Main User Wants:
1. Overall crowdeness of the space should be easily identifiable along with the ability to reserve time
2. The ability to view overall quietness in a potential workspace
3. The ability to quickly identify absolute priority for space selection (Wifi, food, coffee, etc)
4. The ability to see multiple pictures the space
Mapping
Using insights from research, a solution began to take form — an app function that could:
1. Provide users with information needed to find a quiet place to work
2. Gives user control of certain specifications (noise level, wifi, crowd size etc
3. Allows that allows users to reserve a quiet place to work
From there, a potential end-to-end journey through the app was sketched.
Day 2 - Analysis and Sketching
Crazy 8’s
To decide on a potential layout, Crazy 8’s of the most critical screen were sketched within 8 minutes. This section of the brainstorm allowed different ideas to be placed on paper
After deliberation by the team, the best critical screen was selected - the solution sketch - and the potential screens before and after were also sketched.
Day 3 - Prototyping
On Day 3, a medium fidelity prototype was designed on sketch to give users the ability to test run the potential solution.
Through prototyping, potential UX painpoints and additional needs will be able to be identified and overall satisfaction with the in-app experience measured.
Day 4 - Testing
Using the medium fidelity mockups, we were able to test the experience with 5 individuals remotely. The individuals were monitored closely and asked questions as they navigated through the prototype.
Testing uncovered some potential issues that needed to be addressed, which included:
1. Confusion with the checkmarks for amenity selection
2. The inability to modify/cancel a reservation
3. A clarification of reserve time and date
4. A lack of preciseness of some language led to confusion
Using feedback from the user interviews, a new design was iterated leading to the final result.
Final Result
A streamlined experience that allows a user to quickly identify work spaces customized to their needs and location. One which allows the user to quickly reserve a workspace without wasting time.
